Summary
A commission of enquiry, or similar probe, is needed to look into Air Jamaica's problems. Are the past board members personally liable, as directors of the company, to face penalties for the nonpayment of statutory obligations? Is Air Jamaica or its successor really needed to keep the tourist industry alive? Is it fair to farmers or manufacturers that tourism gets such massive financial support from the government and so little is available to other areas of the economy?
The commission of enquiry should also look into whether it was proper for the government to use so much taxpayers' money to subsidise Air Jamaica over so long a period. What assessments were made by government during this period to see whether the airline operations should be closed down or scaled back? Certainly it received a level of support which was surprising, bearing in mind the expenditure limitations on important social services, such as health, education and national security.See the full content of this document
