Caribana Honours Pioneers in Style

Summary

"Caribana itself has gone beyond being a party, it is a community builder," said Ontario Progressive Conservative Leader, John Tory. Tory expressed his wish of having more people attend the parade that happens the first Saturday in August each year. "These are the things that need to be more broadly shared."

Toronto city councillor, Joe Mihevc, Ward 21, St. Paul's West commended the Caribbean community for "shedding a singular cultural form and embracing pluralism." Mihevc has been with Caribana for the last 11 years and said Caribana has paved the way for various multicultural festivities in Toronto, like the Pride Parade, Afrofest, Salsa on St. Clair, Masala! Mehndi! Masti! "Caribana is not one cultural artform, it is the artform of many of cultures in transition, coming together and you have found a way to make it happen," said the councillor. And make it happen during a time when "beige was the colour of choice" and many, did not quite know, what to make of these people who danced in the streets with perhaps too little clothing.
