"Many of them do not get the chance to execute a power of attorney to look after their affairs before they are sent back. Their homes go into foreclosure and they lose everything. It's devastating for them and the families left behind," says Carmela Albarus-Lindo, founder and president of the Family Unification and Resettlement Initiative (FURI), a Harlem-based organisation that advocates on behalf of deportees.

As Dorothy Atchison, an immigration attorney in Queens explains, there is virtually no relief for someone convicted of an aggravated felony. Following the blood letting of the '80s and early '90s caused by the drug posses, many originating out of Jamaica, the U.S. government took a hard line position on drug crimes and hardened criminals.

On the other hand, the FURI head notes, the family structure has to be revisited as too many of the so-called 'Barrel Kids' are lost to the streets when their parents bring them to the U.S.
