[Peter Phillips] was [Portia Simpson Miller]'s leading opponent in the race for the PNP's presidency in 2006 when the former leader P J Patterson resigned. He lost a close race, but remained in the Cabinet for the 18 months Simpson Miller served as prime minister, but relations were cool and there was, insiders say, a clear attempt to keep the Phillips wing of the party at bay.
A year ago, with the PNP now in Opposition, Phillips directly challenged Simpson Miller for the leadership, lamenting the party's lack of philosophical direction and complaining that it had moved far from the ideals of its founder, Norman Manley. He again lost and went on the parliamentary back benches, but still had the support of a large faction of the PNP."The real test will be how Simpson Miller and her lieutenants treat the rest of us from here,' said a Phillips supporter, who declined to be named.
