Gay's stunning performance was paralleled by that of US sprinter Mike Rodgers who clocked 9.93 seconds in the 100m leaving Jamaica's former 100m record holder, Asafa Powell way behind. Powell, who was returning from an ankle injury, clocked a disappointing 10.10 seconds coming in 7th. Several Jamaican spectators voiced their concerns and disappointment. One such supporter, Wilton 'Prentice' Williams, said he is simply asking, "If Asafa knew he was not one hundred per cent why declare yourself fit to run?" Baswel, another enthusiast added, "We have been very patient with him but enough is enough." "Asafa, should get himself together both mentally and physically, and then come back out," added Roland Brammer. "After a while no one will remember the world records, they will remember the umpteenth time he messed up."
