Slight Increase for Int'l Student Numbers

Summary


33,902 students from the U.S. studied abroad in the Latin American region in 2005/06 - an increase of 14.3 per cent over the previous academic year. Jamaica was one of the top ten destinations in the region for American students. A total of 727 students studied in the island in 2005/06, a 31.0 per cent change from 2004/2005.

For the sixth consecutive year, the University of Southern California, one of the leading private research universities in the world, enrolled the largest number of international students. Columbia University, the oldest institution of higher learning in the State of New York, followed in second place and New York University, a private, non-sectarian, co-educational research university, was in third place. The number of students from Jamaica enrolled in colleges and universities in the United States in the academic year 2006/07 was 4,110.
